For those who dont already know this trip started out with a ridiculously stressful miscommunication. Mom and I stayed at the Pelican Inn near San Francisco the night before my flight. Gorgeous little bed and breakfast on Muir Beach, waking at the wee hours we gathered our cheese and bread plate, a little coffee and hit the road for SFO.
While trying to navigate a detour in the city I managed to roll through a stop sign on a hill and get pulled over. Pleading to the not so friendly officer that I was headed to the airport to leave the country for 8 months he gave me a warning and we were on our way once again. Mom dropped me at the international terminal at 6am (3 hours and 2 minutes before my departure time) only to find that all flights were being routed out of the domestic so i haul all my bags through the SFO airport to terminal 3. After waiting for an hour in the line I slide my passport and the error message YOUR FLIGHT HAS ALREADY DEPARTED chimes. With a smile still on my face, as this is obviously an error I waive down the clerk who shrugs his shoulders at me as he could care less. I shall spare you all of the details of the next 3 hours at SFO lugging my bags from terminal to terminal and airline to airline attempting to fix this `error`. I warn those who attempt an around the world ticket on a miles plan... DONT DO IT. What an amazing hassle to deal with 15 different airlines that all want to blame the others for the miscommunications. I finally land at Continental to be helped by the supervisor Kathy. With one of the only smiles I had seen all morning she told me not to worry and booked me on the flight for the following day. Be careful what you wish for... the previous day all I kept saying was `I wish I had one more day`. Wish granted. ugh. Mom (bless her heart) drives me to Santa Cruz for a little beach therapy and to see my grandma Shirley for a quick but wonderful visit. So while I am secured on a fligth the next day, my travel companion is already on his flight with no idea that I will not be arriving in Lima as planned.
The next morning we leave Hollister at 4am again to drive to SFO and again I go to check in 3 hours before my flight only to be told that what Kathy had done for me was not valid and Continental would not put me on the flight. You have got to be kidding me... luckily Kathy was working again that morning. She heard me from a far (it is not often I start to lose my temper) and came over to help. Ah ha! A half hour later I have a boarding pass and my bags are checked... here we go!
