Huaraz, Peru

Huaraz. Known for the adventure seekers, the town serves as a layover for hitting the mountains either for trekking or ice climbing. I found a great little hostel (Hatun Wasi) where I got my own room for $15/night with breakfast included, on demand piping hot water, a tv (which I refuse to turn on) and free wi-fi but the best part is the view!

If the Cordillera Blanca were not gorgeous enough to look at all day, I have been watching the most hilarious stand off on the roof top under my window. Three baby chickens, a rat sized dog and a grey cat starring each other down for the scrapes of food the dog scavenged from somewhere. Im rooting for the brave little scrawny chickens.

The city has begun protesting today making it a bit tourist unfriendly. I attempted to go to the main plaza and was stopped by an australian dude who told me they were rioting and burning tires a few blocks away and to let it settle for a few hours. Apparently, it is a political protest against shutting down the hospital here, which is desperately old and needs to be shut down. There are plans to build a new one, but in a different higher class district and the people of this district are none too happy about it.

The weather was gorgeous the first two days here, of which I spent mostly just relaxing and acclimatizing. Clouds have begun to roll in over the mountains giving it an majestic and surreal look. Reminds me of K2 and I don't pitty those who chose to climb it today. I hope the weather clears up tomorrow so I can head to Laguna 69 (yes, incredibly ridiculous name) and may try to hit Pastoruri the following day for a bit of ice climbing. All weather permitting of course.
